NucLIAR & Flat Earth News

Congratulations! Thanks to the publication of the latest NucLiar “strategic information” piece, the Guardian is now the front-runner for the “Flat Earth News Media Award”, (category: Daft Science & Environment Editor) founded by the Edward Bernays Society for contributions to “moulding public opinon” as part of a hidden economic agenda.

In the middle of the “climate change” dilemma, wouldn’t it be a great PR-idea to sponsor an Oxford professor (pay for the publication of his ludicrous book) who claims that “nuclear dangers are overstated” in order to  generate support for the “nuclear renaissance”?  Worried about the easily detectable, systemic distortions of an incompetent “expert” and  the dangerous “dumbing down” of science? No Fear!    “They report what they are given” [cited in  “Flat Earth News”]

Excuse the irony & candour, but this is so obviously a piece of propaganda for the nuclear industry that the editor who approved it, ought to be fired at the spot: either for lack of journalistic integrity or for sheer stupidity. Here are some basic reasons why the whole story is a  PR-scam:

1) Lack of Expertise:

Allison is a particle physicist, not an expert in molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics  &  genetics  (the  combined, overlapping knowledge necessary for radiation biology). The focus of all big questions about the effects of low doses of ionizing radiation is the cellular, molecular level not the primitive concepts of  “body dose” or “organ dose” which are based on crude physical models developed by – you guessed it – physicists.

2) Comparing apples  to oranges

Allison, as echoed in the article, makes no distinctions between different types of radiation exposure but the effects of  acute,  external, low LET ionizing radiation (gamma-rays from nuclear explosions or x-rays) cannot be simply extrapolated to estimate the health risks from nuclear installations because they result from chronic, internal, high LET ionizing radiation, especially from inhaled or ingested alpha-particles.

Also, not all radioisotopes have the same biological impact if internalized:  e.g. whether from “ hot particles”, “warm particles”, Plutonium or Uranium, the effects are different. If particles are “stuck” in tissue or sequentially decaying radionuclides like Strontium 90 (from weapons fallout) bind to DNA, the radiological and chemical toxicity cannot just be lumped together under the heading of “same dose, same risk”. Auger emitters for example, widely used for radiotherapy, create much greater damage at the cellular level than other radionuklides, i.e. x-rays:

“Even in the case of uniform distribution, some of those Auger emitters are highly radiotoxic compared to hard gamma rays. For Auger emitters to bond to radiosensitive sites in cell nucleus, much higher radiation effectiveness could be expected.”

This is another reason why the simple comparison of risk between radiotherapy exposure, X-rays, CT-scans, Sellafield and “natural background” exposure is not valid since Allison’s arguments are based on the premise that ionizing energy  is  always evenly distributed in  the body, which is demonstrably false. (More on the subject see under 4 below)

3) Nucliar AtTAC aided by “ Truth-Avoiding Coverage

Instead of inflicting on the public yet another endless debate between disagreeing scientists,  it ought to be the job of journalists to investigate who is telling the truth[1] and who is lying or serving a hidden agenda. We need an independent press to establish trust and authenticity in order  to get real insight.

As Nick Davies rightly points out, the concept of “neutrality” or “balance” must be reassessed to stop “the packaging of conflicting claims which is precisely the opposite of truth-telling”. Jha and Bosley are a perfect example of this problem: The assertions of Allison  are “balanced” by reporting what other scientists have to say, but all statements are dubious and not illuminative as long as the bigger political context is missing and even more so,  if the “background” is also a showcase for “churnalism”: “Nuclear radiation risk: The current consensus” which brings us to

4) Who the hell is the ICRP? How is “dose” calculated and what does it mean?

How is the public supposed to make an informed judgement if journalists do not bother to get a deeper understanding of a controversial subject BEFORE they write about it (or publish relevant “material”)? The aforementioned “current consensus” background by Alok Jha is another showcase for ignorant “science reporting”:

“How is radiation harmful?” ( One size fits all – Oversimplifications)

Ionising radiation … can damage the DNA in the nucleus of a cell. Unless the cell’s repair machinery can fix the breaks, or else the cell itself is killed, it has a higher chance of becoming cancerous.”

If the “editor” had bothered to do even a quick research on the subject, he would have discovered, that this is  no longer a valid assessment of risk because hundreds of studies have challenged the outdated view, that relevant biological damage occurs only if the cell nucleus is hit:

To be sure, new mechanistic possibilities must now be considered in interpreting the results of both in vitro and in vivo studies inasmuch as nuclear DNA alone no longer can be viewed as the only relevant target for the actions of IR, or even necessarily the most important target for eliciting at least some detrimental effects of IR under some exposure conditions.”[2]

“What is a safe dose?”

This is an even greater insult to any intelligent reader (and to painstaking journalism) because Jha has obviously just copied the “industry friendly information” (lacking any scientific credibility) he received from Allison. Besides, the first thing he should have done is explain  what “dose” realls means, that it is not based on scientific measurement but just a theoretical, mathematical construct:  to give an  estimate based on a physical “ model”, multiplied with another factor to give “RBE”,  which is supposed to enable the quantification of risk (the likelihood and extent of biological damage). A great source of information for all these questions is the 2004 CERRIE Report (and the surrounding controversy of political influence) which the guardian reported – why did Jha not use  these sources instead of recycling the rubbish from Allison?

It is not so hard to understand  that, whether a tiny alpha-particle is stuck in lung tissue or in the lymph nodes, etc. makes a huge difference in determining the detrimental health effects, not only because different organs have a different radiation sensitivity.  Besides, it is plainly ridiculous to calculate / extrapolate linearly from the “equivalent” (organ) dose which is in turn derived from “effective” (body) dose when effects on microscopic (incredibly tiny, i.e. millionths of a milimeter) volumes at the molecular and cellular  level  need to be examined and understood.

In addition, we also need to understand if and how different radionuclides move in the body (biokinetics). It is pretty obvious that the risk assessement for complex cellular systems  cannot be adopted from studies on external exposure to x-rays or gamma-rays, with a relatively uniform distribution of energy in the tissue. A reliable  model to estimate the combined effects of different types of radiation  has not yet been found.

But all the evidence strongly points to the conclusion that it is the concentration of ionization (its density) in a small group of cells, or even a single cell that defines “risk” at the molecular level, not the bodily dose (more a political consensus than a scientific one)  as Paul  Brown correctly reported in 2004:

The National Radiological Protection Board has always measured a tiny dose received by an individual as if it affected the entire body evenlyso the result was a dilution that appeared to do little harm. The possibility that the dose would lodge near a bone or in the brain and emit radiation inflicting localised damage leading to cancer had not been not accepted.

So all the talks about “background dose” or “safe dose” is meaningless and the absurd claims that below 100 mSv, there is no problem whatsoever and below 200 mSv DNA repair can fix everything (and other absurdities) prove that Allison is a charlatan and I bet 10.000 EUR, that if investigated properly, some connection to the nuclear industry will be found. If Jha had bothered to look at the sources Allison frequently uses, the penny would already have dropped: the US DoE, the NEI, the  NEA, the “Radiation, Science & Health Inc.” (a front group, if there ever was one) and obscure and refuted studies like “Is Chronic Radiation an effective  prophylaxis against cancer?” The man even champions the routine  irradiation of food! (see his website) Allison’s  attempt, to bring the “hormesis myth back to life is obvious, but futile.

The “lack of understanding” of how the body deals with LDIR is the result of ostracizing  independent scientists who represent a danger to the nuclear industry and its unhealthy ties to the military, the great protector of the nuclear holy grail. So any “article” dealing with risks of IR can only make sense if accompanied by “background” about the political agenda behind the “peaceful use of nuclear energy”. The Orwellian character of this charade ought to have been clear from the beginning, with the ludicrous slogan “atoms for peace” which demonstrates that exactly the opposite of Allison’s claim is true: not the “anti-nuclear” lobby created “irrational fear” but the very rational fear of ionizing radiation (a life-preserving instinct since we have no sensory receptor) was ridiculed and the immense risks and uncertainties downplayed, to foster acceptance of an insane technology that threatens all life on earth and has caused a global cancer epidemic (among other diseases).

Since the second world war, scientists have worked on the basis that there is no dose of radiation so low that it’s not dangerous.”

This is complete BS. A quick look at the historical development of the ICRP model shows that for decades the converse view was taken: Based on the extrapolations from Hiroshima, the accepted wisdom was that below a certain threshold, health risks were negligible. The “acceptable” or “permissible” (maximum) dose had to be  adjusted downward again and again as increasing scientific evidence showed that the risks were much higher than originally assumed.

You do have authentic and independent experts on radiation biology (biochemistry) in the UK: among them the courageous Dr. Chris Busby – Why is he not allowed to write in the Guardian or serve as competent advisor on the subject?

Your reports about genetic engineering are also very uncritical …  Political / economic pressure?

The ethical responsibility of the press  to inform the public about these controversial  scientific issues (affecting many generations to come)  is enormous …

Are you up to it with these “reporters” ?

( ….This  comment was sent as reply to the guardian’s “coverage” of the dangers of ionizing radiation….)

P.S.  Send Simon Jenkins to Iraq and let him see the deformed babies, the exploding cancer incidence in children, the immense suffering,  for himself. The man is a small-minded idiot: the incredibly stupid assertion that “Nobody makes money from downplaying risk (how about the nuclear industry, eh? – the evidence of a cover-up (just look at the “official” Chernobyl figures) is staring in your face) while at the same time accusing the “anti-nuclear lobby” of  exaggerating risk for personal gain must go down in the history of print as one of the darkest moments of human bias and ignorance …. because people are suffering and dying while Jenkins gets paid for his high  bollocks  turnout …  (remember Asbestos, DDT, PCBs,  – wasn’t it all “safe” ..???!!!)

Fatima, this little girl, was suffering from severe congenital malformations, is – in Jenkins universe, the result of “irrational fears about irradiation”

Tell that to her parents… (Fatima has died in the meantime, she was born with two heads ….) What can one say to express the feelings of outrage and grief?

Remember, this is the result of “Operation Iraqi Freedom” …..

Nobel Peace Prize & Merchants of Death

Obama peaceMy first reaction when I heard the news was disbelief and  spontaneous laughter – the absurdity of  it all is too much and can perhaps best be expressed with paraphrasing Eric Margolis (he was referring to the Afghan elections) : ..”a fraud wrapped up in a farce”.

The PR-industry who invented the brand “Obama” (“Hope & Change” Trademark) has more reason to celebrate….

That any US president should get a “Peace Prize” is utterly ridiculous but in the case of Obama it is plainly absurd because he has done NOTHING for a peaceful world except delivering eloquent speeches.

As many other commentators have pointed out already, Obama is basically continuing the foreign policy of GWB – the only difference is style: he is intelligent, polite, articulate and conciliatory (in his rhetoric) and “offers a hand” to those states whose learders are willing to concede that defying the interests of the United States of Arrogance (by executing policies in the interest of the population)  in the long run is a bad idea and must stop ASAP.

The recent “intervention” of the Obama administration at the UN – to postpone / avert an urgent UNSC discussion of the devastating Goldstone Report on Israeli war crimes in Gaza  is just one absurd example of  …”a  [a new US-] policy  [of] exporting peace and stability to the world…”

But this incredible farce (even the “naked emperor” tale pales in comparison) can also be seen in another, more realistic light which suddenly makes Obama (as US president) a suitable candidate for the prize:

All these awe-inspiring talks about the “Nobel-Prize” are very deceptive because nobody talks anymore about the basis for all this money:

The Nobel family made a fortune with  (possibly the first) “weapons of mass destruction”:  a new class of explosives   that killed thousands of people. Alfred Nobel’s father “made a killing” (excuse the pun) in the Crimean War and the American Civil War – he was perhaps the first mass manufacturer of mines . Alfred Nobel believed in the idea of “deterrence”- not “education for peace” through values like solidarity and working for economic & social justice.

1999_Bertha_von_SuttnerHis life-long (but unfulfilled) love was  Baroness Bertha von Suttner, the first international female peace activist who probably inspired the Nobel Peace Prize. She worked for a short time as his private secretary and became famous with the publication of her novel “Lay Down your Arms”  in 1889 which sold hundreds of thousands of copies and was translated in many languages. The book was sensational not only because of its female aristocratic author but  because it depicted in graphic detail the horrors of war in an era of nationalism, where “the military and patriotic duties to the fatherland” were considered sacrosanct.

She called war “commanded mass murder”, denounced the deceptive language of “patriotism” and  was also aware of the connection between  (systemic) economic / social injustice and war; she also correspondend with the famous Russian novelist Leo Tolstoi, who supported her work. For Tolstoi “the people lead a slave-like existence to serve the interests of a rich minority who lived at their expense” (that was long ago, one might argue but isn’t the “bank bailout” in the trillions yet another symptom for the refeudalisation of society, for serving the interests of a financial aristocracy?)

Bertha von Suttner also travelled to the United States and one of her comments about America is  still highly relevant today: (.. here the circle to Wall Street supporting Obama and Obama supporting Wall Street …. is closed…)

„While talking about doomed monarchies and the constitution of republics, we build  in the “ideal Republic America” a monetary monarchy , which is more absolute than the power of the Russian tsar…”

Bertha von Suttner received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905. She died shortly before the outbreak of World War I.

Before Alfred Nobel actually died, a premature obituary appeared in a French newspaper titled  “Le marchand de la mort est mort(“The Merchant of Death is Dead”) referring to  Nobel as the man “who became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before”.

From this perspective, awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to the (current) President of the United States makes a lot of sense. To give this award to  the “Commander in Chief” of the mightiest military machine in the world and to the president of a “superpower” whose economic, financial and military elite sees no problem in demanding  global “full spectrum dominance” – no matter what the moral, social and human cost –  seems quite logical to me.

che statliberty with gun

The profits of one  “Merchant of Death” are being used to reward another MoD, the leader of a country that spends more money on weapons (designed for mass murder)  than all other states combined (but always kills for a “good cause” of course)… and at the same time, we have a government unwilling to provide affordable health insurance to all its citizens (another way to increase suffering and death) because this would means lesser profits for the private health insurers who basically run their business as a racket.

(On “Full Spectrum Dominance” and America’s “role in the world”, how it sees itself” – see also (the second part of) the Nobel Prize speech by Harold Pinter with the theme “What is true and what is false?” and the conclusion: “We are surrounded by a vast tapestry of lies…and if we let this situation of organized deception  prevail, humanity and human dignity are doomed… )

This also resonates with Ghandi’s  concept of “Satyagraha” : the power of truth, to fight for truth, hold on to truth, etc. (…. not to be confused with non-violence…)

Coming back to the Goldstone Report and its instant “burial” by the media, followed by the US-supported demise from the UNSC agenda – Ghandi must be turning in his grave… What did he say about Zionism during his lifetime (in 1938)?

“The cry for the national home for the Jews does not make much appeal to me. The sanction for it is sought in the Bible and the tenacity with which the Jews have hankered after return to Palestine.
Why should they not, like other peoples of the earth, make that country their home where they are born and where they earn their livelihood?
Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English or France to the French. It is wrong and inhuman to impose the Jews on the Arabs. What is going on in Palestine today cannot be justified by any moral code of conduct. The mandates have no sanction but that of the last war.

Surely it would be a crime against humanity to reduce the proud Arabs so that Palestine can be restored to the Jews partly or wholly as their national home. The nobler course would be to insist on a just treatment of the Jews wherever they are born and bred. The Jews born in France are French in precisely the same sense that Christians born in France are French.

[…]  If I were a Jew and were born in Germany and earned my livelihood there, I would claim Germany as my home even as the tallest gentile German might, and challenge him to shoot me or cast me in the dungeon; I would refuse to be expelled or to submit to discriminating treatment. And for doing this I
should not wait for! the fellow Jews to join me in civil resistance, but would have confidence that in the end the rest were bound to follow my example…

[…]  And now a word to the Jews in Palestine. I have no doubt that they are going about it in the wrong way. The Palestine of the Biblical conception is not a geographical tract. It is in their hearts. But if they must look to the Palestine of geography as their national home, it is wrong to enter it under  the hadow of the British gun. A religious act cannot be performed with the aid of the bayonet or the bomb. They can settle in Palestine only by the goodwill of the Arabs. They should seek to convert the Arab heart.

The same God rules the Arab heart who rules the Jewish heart… They will find the world opinion in their favor in their religious aspiration. There are hundreds of ways of reasoning with the Arabs, if they will only discard the help of the British bayonet. As it is, they are co-sharers with the British in despoiling a people who have done no wrong to them. I am not defending the Arab excesses. I wish they had chosen the way of non-violence in resisting what they rightly regarded as an unwarrantable encroachment upon their country. But according to the accepted canons of right and wrong, nothing can be said against the Arab resistance in the face of overwhelming odds.” […]

So much for “non-violence” under all circumstances…

But the astounding “act of hypnosis” (which Pinter referred to in his speech) ist still working: no matter how many “reports” about war crimes or crimes against humanity committed by the Israeli government are being published:  they are followed by –   silence.

How is that possible?  The two involved “Merchants of Death”, the US and Israeli government have eternal impunity, no human law can apparently touch them… they seem to be  a  (immoral) class of their own… as the following dialogue between a professor of international law and a former legal counsel to the IDF, which really took place)  shows:

You have inflicted Nuremberg crimes on the Palestinians”. How can you justify that?

“Military necessity.”

That argument was rejected at Nuremberg”.

We have PR-people in the United States who handle these matters for us.”

THE ISRAELI PATIENT -Part 1

Reflections on (German) media and other reactions to the publication of the Goldstone report on Gaza War Crimes

gaza grauen feet

Victim of "Operation Cast Lead"

“We believe that the existence of a moral society clearly requires a profound, honest discussion, of which the voice of soldiers on the ground is an inseparable part.

(Statement from “Breaking the Silence” activists)

German Media resonance to UN Report on War Crimes in the news

1. German State Television :

ARD (“TAGESSCHAU”): 7 broadcasts per day with  73 minutes total airtime and the extended version “Tagesthemen” with 27 minutes airtime at 10 pm.

Mentioned once

in  “tagesschau”: Sept. 15, 8 p.m.

31 seconds in “news in brief” section; no follow up, no context, no comment considered necessary;

(Transcript / English translation)

“Eight months after the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza strip, the UN have released the results of their investigation.

According to the report both Israelis and Palestinians committed numerous war crimes i.e. the mission concluded that Israel intended to punish the whole Palestinian population. The report also condemns the firing of rockets into Israeli residential neighbourhoods by radical Palestinians.

During the Israeli offensive more than 1400 people were killed and thousands were wounded.”

For comparison: the death of Hollywood actor Patrick Swayze was reported in all broadcasts on that day ….

ZDF (“heute”): 2 broadcasts per day[1] with 32 minutes total airtime and the extended version “heute journal” with 30 minutes airtime at 9:45 pm)

Not mentioned at all

Only reported on website (with old video):

UNO wirft Israel und Palästinensern Kriegsverbrechen vor

(“UN accuses Israel and Palestinians of war crimes”)

2. Austrian State Television – ORF (2 channels)

ORF 1 (“Zeit im Bild ”): 4 broadcasts per day with  a total of 42 minutes airtime und ORF 2 (“ZiB” und  extended version “ZiB2”: 25 minutes ): 69 minutes total airtime

Mentioned once

in “ZiB 2”: Sept. 15, 10 pm – 16 seconds – (total airtime 25 minutes)

Transcript / English Translation:

According to a UN report, Israel is responsible for numerous war crimes committed during the Gaza offensive. The report also condemns the Palestinian rocket attacks on Israeli civilians.

Israel has criticized the report but is going to scrutinize its findings.

To be fair, state television (ZDF)  did broadcast previous allegations of war crimes and violations of humanitarian law (Sources: “Breaking the Silence”, Haaretz, etc.):

Israels Soldaten brechen Schweigen über Gaza-Krieg (July 2009)

Schockierende Aussagen zum Gaza-Krieg (March 2009)

They also „reported“ self-exculpatory propaganda like this in January 2009:

Ex-Botschafter Stein: Keine Katastrophe in Gaza

(“[Israeli] Ex-ambassador: No Catastrophe in Gaza”) – with the typical projection theme: („they“ are always to blame for having started the aggression to which “we” had to respond…)

Hamas has forced Israel to start a war – not  the other way round“. ..Israel does not conduct a war against the people of Gaza, who have been taken  hostage by Hamas”….etc.

ARD has also previously reported the findings of Human Rights groups and other NGOs on the outrageous conduct of the IDF during Operation Cast Lead:

“Zögert nicht, alles zu zerstören”

(„Do not hesitate to destroy everything“)

(Source: Breaking The Silence– testimony from IDF soldiers;  July 2009)

Scharfe Kritik an Israel und Hamas

(„Strong Criticism on Israel and Hamas“, Source: AI, July 2009)

ARD also reported on Sept. 9, 2009:

773 tote Zivilisten im Gaza-Krieg?

(“773 dead civilians in Gaza War?”)

“According to B’tselem the war in Gaza caused more civilian deaths than military casualties. The military and journalists (!) consider these figures false: they believe that many of the victims were in fact combatants, erroneously counted as killed civilians.”

“The IDF has put the number of  killed Palestinians at 1166 with two thirds being counted as  Hamas militants.” Then they quote Yaacov Ammidror (a reserve General) as follows:

B’t Selem has a long tradition of lies and deceptions. They claim for example that 248 policemen have been killed. Hamas says that a majority of these policemen were members of their “armed wing” but they need not admit that, one only has to ask Fatah people…”

3174837137_90c4a2d6a2_o

Has B’t Selem ignored facts?”

(Picture: Can you spot the dead “combatants” on the ground?

One journalist called Ben Dror Yamini of the  daily  “Ma’ariv” is also quoted to sow doubt about the accuracy and honesty of B’tselem. He claims that because many names were also on a list of dead persons published by Hamas, this “proves” that they were Hamas combatants. He complains that “it is now being hammered into the heads of the public” that more than 700 of the people killed were civilians, altough this is “simply not true”.

This is just one example (others will follow in my next commentary) of Israel’s latest PR strategy to discredit all justified criticism: “Character assassination” as the last stage of a smear campaign against NGOs (especially Human Rights groups) and of course the UN, that has been going on for some time.

If you have no valid arguments to disprove evidence like this:

…. I asked the Israeli army to give me their list of—which they say about 700 casualties that they claim, or 1,000—I don’t remember now. They refused to give me their list. I wanted the list to check name by name and then to compare with the list that Palestinian human rights organizations compiled and to see where the differences are. And they said they could not give me the list, because this would disclose their sources. In one specific question about two women who were killed in short—by short range from a tank, I asked, “Are these two women included in your list of casualties?” I didn’t get an answer. So, the Israeli refusal to cooperate with information is very telling.

Israeli journalist Amira Hass on Democracy Now!

– you must resort to attacking the personality of the messenger or your opponent (ad hominem attacks) in an attempt to destroy their credibility. In this case not just the person speaking out but the whole organisation behind it.

Under the motto “Consider the Source” the pro-Israeli “thought police” has created or infiltrated groups like “UN-“Watch” who may appear as a decent watchdog at first sight, but as soon as you dig deeper you will find the “affiliation to the American Jewish Committee” and their “work” consists mainly of smearing anybody who dares to speak the truth about Israel (or the US and its economic terror for that matter – just see the case of UN food rapporteur Jean Ziegler)

Thanks to the JTA we are informed with unusual candour about the countermeasures  Israel and “Jewish groups” are going to take to utterly discredit the Goldstone report (which corroberates what many other investigations found earlier) and, in the process, will hammer the last nail into the coffin of the UNHRC’s “battered” reputation (Durban was just the beginning of a smear campaign…)

The unspeakable crime of the UN (and practically all other organisations which criticize Israel’s Human Rights violations)? alleged “hopeless bias” against Israel.

No matter how impeccable their professional records as experts of international law, no matter how high their moral authority is (i.e. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who also chaired a fact-finding mission mandated by the Human Rights Council in 2008), whether it is AI, HRW, B’tSelem, etc. – even the US State Department is “not credible” and “lacks professionalism” and the reports are always “highly flawed”.

A favourite method is to associate  the sinister UN folks (in the minds of the public) with “a hated or despised category” of people and who can be better for this purpose than the ultimate bogeyman Ahmadinejad who must serve as poor substitute for Hitler.

So what did the Knesset speaker first tell the world?

“ The same UN that allows the president of a country to announce on a podium its aspiration to destroy the state of Israel has no right to teach us about morality

(he was of course referring to the Iranian President).

What "morality" could he mean?

What "morality" could he mean?

As all informed citizens of this planet know Ahmadinejad never said, that Israel must be “wiped off the map” and the “outrage” at the UN anti-racism conference in Geneva was also a fine demonstration of the power of Israel’s PR-machine, but that is beside the point.

Thanks to our media sheep the average “consumer” now believes that Ahmadinejad, standing for the “evil” state of Iran, and by having been labelled   a “Holocaust denier” is of course a threat to world peace. (I have covered this subject in more detail in my German blog at wordpress – medienschafe).

The negative “terrorist” frame for Iran, Hamas or Hisbollah for that matter, has been firmly established in the public opinion so that the mere mention of their names is enough to trigger all the desired contempt and fears.

But the JTA is surprisingly frank about the real concerns of the Israeli government: the decades of suffering and monumental injustice the Palestinians have endured is not the central problem, no – the Goldstone report is rather “a public relations problem” not  the final proof of the  moral abyss into which the IDF and the Israeli government have fallen….

While ordinary people like us stand aghast in view of the systematic brutality (weblink: scroll down forEnglish version) of the Gaza massacre –

(I  quite agree with Norman Finkelstein: this was no “war” – given the huge disparity of force and  the earlier transformation of Gaza into an “Open-Air prison”)  – these people are mainly concerned about  the “bad timing” of the report just as one is trying “to convey the impression in Washington that Israel is more open to negotiations than the Palestinians and that the principal threat to the region is Iran.

(Increasing evidence of) white phosphorus, DIME weapons; traumatized and undernourished children, total destruction, deliberate killing of civilians including children, collective punishment, targeting of  flour mills, chicken farms, water wells and sewage lagoons – no big deal!

Instead, the problem is, that the “hopelessly biased” reporting of all these atrocities “gives Palestinians and Arab nations an opportunity to complicate that effort.” [to present Israel as  a “reasonable” party willing to negotiate for “peace”, etc.)

But the hypocrisy and self-righteousness knows no bounds: the “radical body” UNHRC is accused of having “consistently demonized Israel, while giving a free pass to some of the world’s worst tyrants, from Sudan to Iran.” (Where is the proof for this accusation?)

This is a recurring theme in Israel’s verbal attacks: they accuse others of their own immoral practices, perhaps a case of  what psychologists call “projection”? For we all know that the masters of “demonization” are located in Tel Aviv (and Washington) – as the cases of  Iran or Hamas clearly demonstrate.

(to be continued….)

Read the Goldstone report and see for yourself if it is “biased”…

P.S.  I am going to explain why this (trilogy) is called “The Israeli Patient” in the next post on this subject …

Hide and Seek in the Holy Land

This insistence by Hamas on denying the reality of the Holocaust is as reprehensible as it is astonishing.”

Denying history gets you nowhere.”

“INFORMATION DOMINANCE”: …” build up and protect friendly information and degrade and deny  information from your adversary … This means  that unfriendly information must be targeted …What is perceived as independent news media is in fact part of a psychological operation” ….

This is a reply to  THE HOLOCAUST AND PALESTINE

I am afraid Matthew Rothchild has also fallen victim to a “psyop”, yet another brillian PR-campaign launched by the Israeli government.  As Hamas has not obliged with any rocket attacks lately, the apparent goal was to reinforce the established negative “frame” for Hamas: “terrorists, fanatics, religious extremists, “no partner for peace”, etc. to “pre-empt” any attempts to end the brutal siege on Gaza or – Heaven forbid – perceive Hamas leaders and the people that voted for them, as human beings. At the same time it served as a smear-campagin against the UN(RWA), which stands accused of “appeasing Hamas” or “collaborating” with Hamas. Could this have anything to do with  the UN investigating and condemning IDF war crimes in Gaza?…. Within hours headlines like these appeared in the media:

“Hamas slams UN over “Holocaust classes” in Gaza”

“Hamas rips UN over Holocaust lessons in Gaza”

UN denies Holocaust to appease terrorists”

The first thing to do is check the source: in this case it came from Reuters and AP. Most journalists stuck to the Reuters text, omitting only quotes from Hamas representatives which dealt with the political instrumentalisation of the Holocaust:

“Regardless of the controversy, we oppose forcing the issue of the so-called Holocaust onto the syllabus, because it aims to reinforce acceptance of the occupation of Palestinian land.”

“I do not exaggerate when I say this issue is a war crime, because of how it serves the Zionist colonizers and deals with their hypocrisy and lies,”

Instead they added statements from “Israeli officials”like these:

….this should make the West think twice about ending its boycott of Hamas, in place since the group seized Gaza by force in 2007. …; the comments are “obscene” and place Hamas in a pariah club of Holocaust deniers that includes Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center called for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to fire both Abu Zayd and another UNRWA representative, Gaza director John Ging, and to ensure that UNRWA schools teach pupils about the Holocaust.

“The role of UNRWA must be to help set the stage for peace and reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis, not as agents for the agenda of terrorist groups”

So now we are supposed to see that “this is further proof that the main obstacle for the peace that has eluded the region for far too long lies on the Palestinian side.

Only after the next generations are taught, and take the lessons of the Holocaust to heart, can we have any hope for true and lasting peace in the region.

Of course “using Holocaust denial as a political tool” MUST stop….. (but  not what Norman Finkelstein calls “The Holocaust Industry” … we shall return (to find out about) the “lessons of the Holocaust”  later…)

Then I found a reference to the Palestinian News Agency Maan which is the real source of the story and this lead to the context that was totally omitted in all these articles:

“The Gaza group’s letter was sent THE SAME DAY that Israeli Education Minister Gideon Sa’ar told the government’s cabinet that the word NAKBA had been removed from all lesson plans. “It can be said with certainty that Arab Israelis experienced a tragedy in the war, but there will be no use of the word ‘Nakba,’ whose meaning is similar to Holocaust in this context.”

For Benjamin Netanyahu the  word Nakba in schools is “tantamount to incitement against Israel.”

After studying the matter with education experts it was decided that the term nakba should be removed. It is inconceivable that in Israel we would talk about the establishment of the state as a catastrophe,” said Yisrael Twito, a spokesman for Education Minister Gideon Sa’ar, (Reuters).

Let us for a moment imagine that a German had argued – in a conversation with Polish people like this:

“It is inconceivable that in Germany we would talk about the invasion of Poland ( as part of the establishment of the “Third Reich”) as a “catastrophe” – all hell would break loose and rightly so. Of course the magnitude and monstrosity of the Nazi crimes cannot be compared to the terror, massacres and ethnic cleansing in 1948, which the Palestinians call the “Nakba” and Israel was not invading another country but the point is:

Why must the people of one state forever repent and feel guilty for crimes committed in the past by a former totalitarian regime but the new state, that was to a great extent built on the worldwide empathy for the victims of these crimes, refuses to admit its own crimes in establishing that state?

Instead of  taking the “Holocaust lessons to heart” which means recognize the dangers of organized national chauvinism based on racism and / or religion, of affirming one social body by denigrating another (first a “superior” people than a “chosen” people who could strip the “inferior” human beings of their rights and not feel guilty about it)

How abhorrent Nazi terror and mass murder was, it was over in 1945 but the consequences of the Nakba did not go away, on the contrary. The situation of the refugees and the Palestinians in their own land became worse every year because Israel never intended to accept the territorial restrictions laid down in the UN partition plan of 1947.

The “Holocaust” is over but the “Nakba” is not: the brutal occupation of the West Bank, the cruel bombings and siege in Gaza, the illegal wall that cuts deeply into Palestinian land, the building of further “settlements”, the daily humiliation at checkpoints, the systematic dehumanization of Palestinians, who have been stripped of their rights, because they are not Jews and must make room for the “chosen people” – how can they be expected to put the Holocaust on the curriculum of their schools?

How does a UNRWA teacher explain to a Palestinian child that severe violations of the UN Declaration of Human Rights and the Geneva Conventions (results of World Wars and Nazi crimes) committed by the state of Israel for decades against its people, is not sanctioned by the “international community”?

The pupil could ask:

Why is past Jewish suffering superior to ours, which seems endless and why can it serve to excuse the injustice and aggression of the Jewish state? We did not build Auschwitz….  How obscene is a contest for suffering and injustice? Why are no questions about the Holocaust allowed? Why does it give them impunity while our legitimate resistance is presented as “terrorism”?

The state which is responsible for their endless suffering refuses to admit its guilt and deal with it, even punishes Jews (see below) for simply acknowledging the Nakba (thus showing compassion,  and respect for historic truth and universal human rights)

Is this a farce, a tragicomedy or a case for a psychiatrist?

One “catastrophe” must forever be omnipresent in our minds or else..(in Germany it is a crime to “deny” the Holocaust but the other “catastrophe” (which pales in comparison) must not even be mentioned because it would shatter the myth of the “essential goodness and moral superiority” of the Jewish people on which Zionism tried to build the “national identity” (along with the “biblical license” to expropriate Palestinian land?

Baruch Spinoza must be turning in his grave….

BUT while the world media sheep are attacking and demonizing Hamas, (to provide Israel with a moral figleaf for the cruel blockade and undermine Hamas ouvertures to negotiate a two-state settlement based on Israel’s withdrawal to the 1967 borders) in  the same article the Palestinian News agency Maan referred to an earlier story and this context was totally omitted in all Western media “reports”:

“On the other hand in January some were angry when, at the height of the Gaza War Palestinians erected a Memorial Site near the West Bank city of Ramallah to MOURN Nazi Germany’s crimes against the Jewish people.   The whole article (published in January) can be read here:

Here are some excerpts:

“Hundreds of Palestinians were estimated to have attended the event in Ni’lin that coincided with the United Nations-declared World HOLOCAUST Remembrance Day with photographs purchased from an Israeli museum.

[…]  “The Koran orders us to acknowledge the Holocaust and understand it,” ….

[…] why the memorial was chosen for Ni’lin, a devastated Palestinian town sliced apart by Israel’s separation barrier.

“We thought the public should understand the pain and suffering the Nazis caused the Jews,” Amira said. “Unfortunately, we are paying the price for the immense pain suffered by the Jews during the Holocaust.”

“People are surprised at what they see here; there are people who are seeing images of the suffering in the Holocaust for the first time,” he said. “There are people who didn’t know anything about Jewish history.”

“In mid-2008, the HAMAS movement CONDEMNED the Jewish Holocaust, as well, insisting that it “was not only a crime against humanity but one of the most abhorrent crimes in modern history.”

What the Hamas minister said can be read HERE. (Source: The Guardian)

How Israel helped to empower Hamas as a rival to the secular Palestinan resistance is another example of “unfriendly information” that must disappear from the public debate….

My “favourite” reaction to the Reuters article comes from – the one and only – Alan Dershowitz:

His headline is Can A State be built on a Pack of Lies? . (The irony escapes him obviously). Here are some pearls of  his “wisdom”:

“There is absolutely no way in which Hamas would ever allow any kind of objective analysis of the Holocaust to be taught to their students. The essence of Hamas education is brainwashing and the shutting down of any marketplace of ideas.  What Hamas fears most is truth, science, history and objectivity.

FACT: This is the ultimate hypocrisy. What would  Ilan Pappe or Neve Gordon have to say about Israel’s commitment “to truth, history and objectivity”? (To say nothing about Norman Finkelstein…)

Just try this

Israeli Holocaust museum fires employee who mentioned Palestinians’ Nakba

“A state built on lies cannot long endure, unless it is an entirely totalitarian state.[…]”

“If it  [Hamas] were to become a state, its control over the minds and actions of its citizens would become even more total.  The sad reality is that totalitarian censorship—provided it is completely totalitarian—really does work.

“The people of Gaza really believe that the Holocaust never occurred.”

FACT:  No, but as as result of “The Holocaust Industry” (which drowns out their own ongoing suffering) they are not very enthusiastic to accept everything at face value.  Besides Many Israelis are kept in ignorance about the crimes committed in 1948 (the Nakba) …  With modern PR-instruments you can establish a totalitarian “thought control” without obvious censorship .. the brilliant control and “information dominance” Israel has established in major parts of the Western media is the perfect example….

“They really believe that firing rockets at school children is God’s command.”

FACT:  Remember Baruch Goldstein’s massacre in a Hebron mosque in 1994It was the incentive for Hamas to target civilians in Israel .... Take a look at the  naked aggression of orthodox Jewish “settlers” and think twice…

“They really believe that Jews are a combination of the devil monkeys, pigs and vermin.”

FACT is that Judaism teaches that only Jews are human beings and several military / political leaders are on the record for calling Palestinians (Arabs)  anything from “cattle” to “cockroaches” (see alsolatest reports from “Breaking the Silence”, in Haaretz  and other sources)

“They really believe that Jews control the world and that Barak Obama is a puppet whose strings are pulled by hook-nosed “Yids.”

FACT is that Obama’s promises to AIPAC and the growing literature documenting massive Zionist influence in the US encourage such “views” enormously…. That Obama does nothing to stop the expropriation of Palestinian land in the West Bank and East Jerusalem speaks for itself… (see also my former post about “Change”)

“They really believe that Israel doesn’t want peace and seeks to destroy the Islamic world and its holy places.”

FACT is that Israel does not want peace –it is so obvious from the historical  and political record that only severe cases of autism (or ideological indoctrination) fail to see it….

In the Jan. 3 Ha’aretz, Yossi Sarid, chairman of the Meretz party, wrote, “What does frighten Sharon [and his successors] … is any prospect or sign of calm or moderation. If the situation were to calm down and stabilize, Sharon would have to return to the negotiating table and, in the wake of pressure from within and without, he would have to raise serious proposals for an agreement.

This moment terrifies Sharon and he wants to put it off for as long as he possibly can.” In contrast, Sarid said that Sharon understands “that the terrorists and those who give them asylum are not the real enemies. Instead, the real enemies are the moderates…. You fight terrorists-a pretty simple operation-but you must talk with moderates, and this is a very tricky, if not dangerous, business.” …

Back to Dershowitz:

“It is difficult to build an enduring peace on such a structure of lies.”

EXACTLY.

The best description of Israel’s contribution to the “peace process” I have ever seen.

To pretend that the violence of Hamas militants is not the unfortunate but legitimate result of  Israel’s state terror, systematic injustice, dehumanization and occupation brutality and instead portray them as deranged antisemites and Holocaust-deniers is pathetic and reinforces the  dangerous stereotype of Judaeophobia (Anti-Semitism is nonsense, as Arabs are also semites).

The ultimate irony is that many Israelis of German descent have applied for German passports ….just in case …. and emigration is rising .. Small wonder as  the “redeemed “Holy Land” ´(far from being a safe haven) is now the most dangerous place on earth for Jewish people …..

“I am a patriot (currently serving in the IDF), I wanted to give everything for Israel  but this state is somehow insane. Life here isn’t normal.”

(Rotem Pappe, a  young Israeli woman with a German passport)

No Change but “Concerned” Complicity

Obama:

“We will  actively and aggressively seek lasting Middle East peace”

“Let me be clear – America is committed to Israel’s security and

we will always support Israels right to defend itself against legitimate threats.”

(Obamas actual words (in red Italics) and my “heretic” ideas about real change…)

CHANGE: Let me be clear: For years we have been parotting the lines about “Israel’s security needs” but what about the security and right of self-determination of the Palestinian people? Why have they been ignored for more than 60 years? We all know the answer: Because the Zionist influence in this country and in other parts of the world is immense and incompatible with democratic decision-making and the rule of law.

The civilian population of Gaza is considered a BIG THREAT in (to) Israel because it produces more offspring than the Israelis. The birth rate is much higher so the democraphic balance is more and more tilting in favour of the Palestinians. From a legal and moral standpoint of course this can never be the justification for the kind of massacre we have just been witnessing (bombing and shelling densely populated civilian neighbourhoods, schools, mosques, police academies, shelters (UN schools) and UN warehouses) and using new diabolical weapons like DIME. The Israeli military leadership and the government must be held accountable for these war crimes and crimes against humanity and the  production and export of these inhumane weapons in (from) the US must stop immediately.

For years Hamas has launched thousands of rockets at innocent Israeli citizens. No democracy can tolerate such danger to its people. Nor should the international community and neither should the Palestinian people themselves, whose interests are only set back by acts of terror.”

CHANGE: For decades Israel has violated the rights of the Palestinian people. In 1948 hundreds of thousands of innocent people were expelled from their homeland, hundreds of villages were destroyed and thousands were killed when they tried to defend their rights. Even before the state of Israel existed, violent Zionist underground movements committed acts of terror against the British administration and the Arab native population.

Terrorist organisations like the Irgun and the Stern Gang (who called themselves “legitimate resistance” became known and feared for their ruthless tactics and complete disregard for the sanctity of human life. (see Ilan Pappe and other historic accounts)

Israel accepted the UN- partition plan of 1947 but never intended to abide by its rules that is to say – accept the borders. They provoked a war against the Arab neighbours, knowing very well that their own military strength and a pact with King Abdullah of Jordan would ensure the desired outcome: military victory and expansion of the territory the UN had consigned to their state: the partition plan gave them 56% of Palestine (although two thirds of its population were Arabs) but only one year later they had taken another 20 % from the Palestininans.

In 1967 they launched another war to seize the West Bank, Jerusalem, the Gaza strip and the Sinai. They never recognized the rights of the Palestinians as human beings or owners of the land. In open disdain of countless UNSC-Resolutions Israel has encouraged new  illegal “settlements” in the West Bank (Galilee) and even pays huge sums to the settlers as an incentive to move to a territory that belongs to Palestinian families who have been living there for generations and in many cases peacefully with Jewish (not Zionist) and Christian families.

They made sure, that the lives of the P. In the OT would be become hell: roadblocks, checkpoints, illegal arrests, daily humiliation and harassment, collective punishment, wilful destroying of houses and property, detaining and killing of children, degrading treatment and torture, in a nutshell:  use the occupation to terrorize the people so much so as to “encourage them to leave” as the euphemism for this structural form of ethnic cleansing would go.

Overview OCHA Reports Focus:  Settler Violence

VIDEO:  Jewish and Palestinian Voices

They are “justifying” (excusing, rationalizing) their own atrocties by stripping the Palestinians off their humanity and dignity – the same thinking the Nazis had towards the “Jews”. They became so dehumanized and were turned into such a big scapegoat for all kinds of fears and frustrations that in the end there were only perceived as a huge “threat” to the health and security of the state and therefore had to be stripped of their rights and finally be eliminated. The same “reasoning” is going on in the heads of the Israeli leadership, especially the military and the “intelligence” services. (what a misnomer!)

No democracy can tolerate such danger and treatment of its people and this of course applies also to the democratically elected Palestinian government, represented by Hamas who took over complete control of Gaza after a failed coup by Fatah traitors, arranged and paid for by the US and Israel. Mahmoud Abbas does not represent the majority of the Palestinians who voted for Hamas in 2006 because they were fed up with the corrupt and brutal “Palestinian Authority” after Israel “disposed of” Arafat who fell into the trap called “Oslo agreements”.

“To be a genuine party to peace the quartett has made it clear that Hamas must meet clear conditions:

  • Recognize Israel’s right to exist
  • Renounce violence
  • Abide by past agreements”

CHANGE: As a lawyer I find it unbearable that conditions are only imposed ON ONE PARTY in this conflict and its the abused victim not the original perpetrator! So if this is supposed to bring us just one inch closer to peace, ….to be a genuine party to peace  Israel must meet clear conditions:

  • Recognize the Palestinians as equal human beings and respect their right for self-determination.
  • Renounce state-terrorism (end the occupation, go back to the status quo ante (pre 1967 borders)
  • For heavens sake show the world that the word honesty does exist in Hebrew and has not lost its meaning
  • Respect international law or be expelled from the UN and the “international community”
  • Treat others as you want to be treated (that would be Kant, wouldn’t it?)

“Going forward, the outline for a durable ceasefire is clear:

  • Hamas must end the rocket fire.
  • Israel will complete the withdrawal of its forces from Gaza.
  • The US and our partners will support a credible anti-smuggling and interdiction regime so that Hamas cannot rearm. “

CHANGE: Going forward, the outline for a durable ceasefire is clear:

Hamas will end the rocket fire as soon as Israel stops acting like a rogue and fascist state.

Israel must not only withdraw from Gaza, it will pay reparations for the huge damage it has done and respect the fact that the huge Gas reserves  (discovered in 2002 along the coast of Gaza) belong TO THE PALESTINIANS and not to ISRAEL. This war was not “only” launched to kill as many P. As possible, (show Israeli voters how “tough” you are) remove Hamas from power and destroy all signs of their civilian administration but also TO TAKE CONTROL OVER THESE GAS FIELDS

As long as Israel does not stop its violent and criminal actions (state-terror, systematic land expropriation) Hamas is perfectly entitled to defend itself and the population of Gaza (and the West Bank for that matter). Besides a huge number of arms fell into the hands of Hamas when the attempted coup (arranged by the US and Israel) failed and the weapons smuggled in from Egypt were left behind. But of course you are not supposed to know that.  Firing rockets at civilians is not a legitimate defense against the occupiers but given the huge disparity in military power what else can they do, except use guerilla warfare? Jewish “resistance” / “terror”-groups used not only the same but worse tactics to get rid of the British authorities (and they had a legal mandate!) and to this day they have been admired for it (see Livni (both her parents were members of the Irgun – probably the worst terror group at the time (1930s till 1948)

“We look forward to Egypt’s  continued leadership and partnership in laying a foundation for a broader peace through a commitment to end smuggling from within its borders.”

CHANGE: Hosni Mubarak is a cruel and corrupt dictator who wants to stay in power as long as he lives.and does not give two hoots about democracy. This is not compatible with “American values” but as another president said before me “He is a SOB, but he is OUR SOB.” So there you go: we prop up corrupt Arab leaders who oppress their people because it is so much easier for our investors and corporate sponsors to do business (especially arms trade) with these people.  Yeah, I know that the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt (Hamas is their offspring) became stronger every year because the poverty and corruption (which always get worse when empires like us intervene)… made the people turn to religious leaders to find some moral authority – but as Rummy said: stuff happens….

“Just as the terror of rocket fire aimed at innocent Israelis is intolerable so too, is a future without hope for the Palestinians. I was deeply concerned by the loss of Palestinian and Israeli life in recent days and by the substantial suffering and humanitarian needs in Gaza.

Our hearts go out to Palestinian civilians who are in need of immediate food, clean water and basic medical care and have faced suffocating poverty for far too long. “

CHANGE: Talking about the “terror” of rocket fire in Israel we forgot to mention that the balance of “terror” (Israeli style: first steal their land, humiliate them, provoke resistance, dehumanize them, then kill them) stands as follows:

Another "terrorist" target....More than 5.000 Palestinians have been killed since 2000 ; the great majority of them civilians. Since the Palestinians are a very young people (average age 17) the number of dead children is also very high. According to B’tselem: more than 1,000 children have been killed by Israel since the second intifada (which means “to shake off”).

The “settlers” (criminal colonists) in the West Bank  have managed to kill more than  130 innocent civilians in the last 2 years alone and Israeli  violence- not only from the settlers – is steadily increasing: (In 2007 for every Israeli death there were 25 Palestinian deaths; in 2002 the ratio was 1:2,5) Israel has repeatedley  violated ceasefire agreements (honoured by Hamas) and killed several hundred Palestinians since the staged “withdrawal” from Gaza. (The UN is quite clear about this act of deception: Israel removed the Jewish colonists and military stations but retained complete control over Gaza (land, sea, air, economy) so according to international law it must still bear all responsibilities as the occupying power.)

The most recent war of aggression was planned a long time ago (even during negotiations about a truce) and was carried out with inhumane brutality and criminal means (use of WP, DU and DIME weapons). It is clear that such an attack on the most densely populated area in the world, on starving and frightened people, many of them children living in a ghetto where all border crossings are controlled by Israel, constitutes a  war crime and  a crime against humanity.

Being “concerned” about the suffering Palestinians is not  enough. These innocent people were killed with our weapons, our F16s, our Apache helicopter-gunships, our “Bunker-Buster” bombs, etc. We did not only build them, we (I mean you) also paid for them with our taxes: every year between 3-5 billion dollars are transferred to Israel, a criminal state,  as “aid”.  This means we are sponsoring terror, state terror, to be precise. So this has got to stop now. No more military or other aid for Israel until it abides by international law and the UN declaration of Human Rights. Universal law means there are no exceptions:  you cannot strip human beings of their rights simply by putting them in a certain category – “terrorists”, “communists”, (“Jews” under the Nazis, “Niggers” in the US before the civil rights movement, etc.)  Palestinians are equal human beings and their rights must be respected – no matter whay ancient religious text you may quote.  Humanity is not negotiable.

“Now we must extent a hand of opportunity to those who seek peace

As part of a lasting ceasefire Gaza’s border crossings should be open to allow the flow of aid and commerce with an appropriate monitoring regime with the international and Palestinian authority participating. Relief efforts must be able to reach  Palestinians who depend on them. The US will fully support an international donors conference to seek short term humanitarian assistance and long-term  reconstruction for the Palestinian economy. This assistance …. will be provided to and guided by the Palestinian Authority.”

CHANGE: Now it is clear to anybody with an IQ above room temperature and the ability to look at the facts that Israel is not seeking peace. It never has and it never will as long as the world is looking the other way when state terror and systematic crimes are being committed. Moral and ethical behaviour are the pillars of humanity and any state which does not respect universal laws must be punished for it by the international community. All this stupid talk about “firing rockets into Israel” and “the right of self-defense” leads nowhere. It’s only goal is to give Israel’s political leadership carte blanche for the next severe violations of international law under the guise of “security”.

States who respect international law and fundamental human rights have no problem with “security”.

The silly phrase about “no democracy can tolerate such behaviour (rockets from Hamas) serves only to distract from the real question: WHY would any state want to fire rockets at us? Because they are “religious extremists”? (So are the Jewish settlers in the West Bank) Because they hate all Jews? BS – the Arabs have lived peacefully with Jewish neighbours for centuries (see also Andalucia) but with the arrival of the Zionist colonialists this was no longer possible.

Stealing other people’ s land and claiming you have a right to do so does not foster peace, does it? What would Americans say if one day foreign settlers appeared, claiming that they found an ancient peace of paper which entitled them to occupy the land and expel the families who had lived there for many generations?  And pleeeeze, stop saying this is God’s will? God cannot be found in the old testament -a weird collection of horror stories (see Thomas Paine: The Age of Reason) but perhaps in the new testament and most likely in the ten commandments….

Hamas as a political party, was democratically elected and no matter how much we dislike this outcome we have no right to strip them of their legitimacy and punish the people for having elected the “wrong party”. Mahmoud Abbas is despised by a majority of Palestinians and his “Presidency” expired on January 9 this year. So they ought to be new elections now but Israel (among other goals) wants to prevent another confirmation for Hamas so with the recent massacre they have successfully destroyed the probability of elections  in the near future.

Lasting peace requires more then a long ceasefire and that is why I will sustain an active commitment to seek two states living side by side in peace and security. Senator Mitchell will carry forward this commitment as well as the effort to help Israel reach a broader peace with the Arab world that recognizes its rightful place in the  community of nations. (Arab peace initiative acknowledged) ….now is the time for Arab states to act on the initiative’s promise by supporting Abbas….. by taking steps towards normalizing relations with Israel and by standing up to extremists that threaten us all...” ….we must  make it clear to all nations in the region that external support for terrorists must stop.”

CHANGE: For God’s sake let us forget all this crap about “the peace process”. There is no peace process, there never was one (which deserved the name) because Israel has always used these talks to gain more time. Even during and after these “Peace talks” did the expansion of illegal “settlements” continue and after Oslo it even accelerated to an unprecedented level.

Perhaps the greatest charade of all is the crazy talk about “a two-state-solution“.  If any Israeli polititican had any real inclination to work towards a Palestinian state they could have achieved that a long time ago (it’s been more than 60 years now…). But they never wanted such a state and have done everything to prevent its existence: grab more and more land in the West Bank, terrorize the natives so they eventually give up and leave,  encourage the rise of Hamas (yes, it’s true) to create a rival to the PLO (Fatah) and ensure that  “divide and rule” tactics will  weaken the Palestinian resistance so that you can present its leadership to the world als “unfit to govern” and “unfit for peace talks”, etc. Hamas is the result of Israel’s cunning policies not its origin The rise of Islamist groups in the ME is mainly the outcome of the shady alliances between corrupt secular Arab leaders and  “Western interests”.

Israel has expanded its territory from the very beginning (even before 1948 it had plans to do so) and will not stop before it has achieved “Eretz Israel”. Of course rational, grown-up people would not even dream of claiming a property right out of an ancient collection of stories whose authors were never verified, and treating them like a kind of land register. But we are supposed to think that Israeli leaders are rational and Hamas are fanatic madmen – perhaps it is the other way round? Hamas uses strong words in its founding charter but they are not idiots and know perfectly well that Israel will not go away and that they must find an arrangement to live together.

Hamas leaders have repeatedly said that they are willing to negotiate on the basis of the pre 1967 borders and some form of compensation for the “refugees” (who were driven out in a series of ethnic cleansing operations after the state of Israel came into being in 1948).

As long as Israel does not respect the rights of the Palestinian people and treats them like shit – why should the Arab states reach out to it? And even when they do – as with the Peace initiative by the Arab League  – Israel will reject any such offers.

As long as Israel behaves like a rogue state, ignores international law and keeps blaming the Palestinian resistance (the result of its own immoral behaviour) for all troubles (increasing violence which culminated in suicide bombings) I cannot find any justification for accepting Israel into the community of nations.  Yes, it’s true – extremists threaten us all, but the deception is, that they are not only to be found in Islamist circles they also exist in Christian and Jewish communities and we all know that Zionism  is the root cause for the catastrophe that has unfolded in Palestine and Israel in the last 60 years.

As Noam Chomsky put it so nicely: The best form of self-defense for Israel is STOP COMMITTING CRIMES AND RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF THE PALESTINIANS.

My thoughts: ISRAELI VIOLENCE IS NOT MORALLY SUPERIOR TO PALESTINIAN VIOLENCE (INCLUDING HAMAS)

BY GRANTING ISRAEL EXCEPTION FROM ALL MORAL CODES AND INTERNATIONAL LAW  WE HAVE BECOME COMPLICIT IN THESE CRIMES. THIS INCLUDES THE HYPOCRITES IN THE EU WHO TALK ABOUT “EUROPEAN VALUES”.
